I had a great birthday last week! I would like to thank all of you who took 7 seconds to post a happy birthday comment on my Facebook wall. All of your seconds combined probably adds up to…a lot of seconds… It was a wonderful birthday. Thanks to my parents and girlfriend, I now have a studio mic and pre-amp to work with so I am actually in a position to start practicing the ways of studio engineering & production. Here is my current (very sparse) setup:

I am really excited, because I constantly have musical ideas / arrangements floating around in my brain, and I pretty much have never had a means of laying them down and hashing them out. My ultimate dream is to be in a situation where on one hand I can play guitar as a job (whether it be with Philmont, or as a touring / studio guitarist), but on the other hand I can be a producer, and work on other artists’ material. Anyway, this is just laying the groundwork for that, so I am excited!

So February is a really great month – as you all know, 3 of Philmont’s birthdays fall into this month (not to mention Scott’s falling just a few days after Feb), but it is extra cool for me because my birthday is on the 9th, my girlfriend’s is on the 18th, and Valentine’s Day falls right in the middle on the 14th. So we usually have some sort of celebration of all 3 events simultaneously. On Saturday we took a day trip down to beautiful Charleston SC, which is something we have done on a handful of special occasions during our almost-six-year relationship. The weather was near perfect, we walked all around the downtown area enjoying the sunshine, and that evening we drove down to Folly Beach and had a picnic dinner in the sand. Charleston is a great place to visit if you’ve never been!

For Valentine’s Day, Heather and I had a great lunch at Cracker Barrel, then watched (500) Days of Summer; ’twas a good time indeed. Tell me: do you love or hate V-Day? I’m curious.

I have discovered some really great bands this week, so my recommendations below are extra delicious and you should definitely check them out. Have a wonderful week.

Three Songs to Buy on iTunes This Week:
1. “The ’59 Sound” by The Gaslight Anthem

2. “Swim” by Surfer Blood

3. “Geraldine” by Glasvegas

  1. That set up is pretty awesome! You have inspired me to finally set up Cubase on my computer so I can record some awesomeness.

Folly Beach, huh? I’m going to have to mention that to my mom! She’s planning my grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary celebration, which
    will be happening in Charleston,SC.

I don’t really view Valentine’s day any differently (Though I don’t date, so I really don’t have a reason to) than other days of the year, but my brother and I went out to see Tangled and *gasp!* get dinner at Cracker Barrel this year.

  2. So, Josiah went all romantically inclined this year. I must say I’m half way impressed lol. So ummmm.. you haven’t texted me back in like 2 weeks and now I might understand why. Nice lil musical round table :).

  3. You have an awesome set-up Josiah! I so wish I knew how to use Pro-Tools for music… maybe I’ll ask Dad to teach me. 🙂
Hmmm Valentines Day… well, it would be loads better if I had a Valentine. 🙂 I don’t like the commercialism, but I think it’s a great holiday for couples, married and not, to spend time together. It’s nice to get chocolate too. 🙂
Glad you had a great time with Heather, I love that picture of y’all. 🙂

  4. same birthday as your girlfriend! holla!

  5. heyy josiah! i’m a big fan and i’ve been trying to find that new ep in stores and i’m having there any way to get it besides itunes?
