I grew up loving the band Ace Troubleshooter. A lot of you guys have no idea who they are but they were a pop/punk outfit that put out a hand full of records when I was in high school and, after the band’s split, their front man became the full-time bassist for Relient K. I say all that to quote a line from their song “Have it All” that talks about the Christmas season–

“Counting down expecting latest, greatest.
Newest model maybe, hope.
Wishing hoping praying to outdo the Joneses.
Squalor impulse crowding tis the season.
Do the days turn just for these?
Savior born in manger please forgive us born in the inn.”

I hate to be the guy who post a blog the day after Christmas about how our focus should be on Jesus and not material things but just look at the society we live in. We have sales for the days leading up to Thanksgiving, after Thanksgiving, the weeks, days and hours before Christmas, the days after Christmas—we’re surrounded by it, constantly influenced by it and if we’re not careful we’ll be overtaken by it.
Giving and receiving gifts isn’t a bad thing at all. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t one of my favorite things about Christmas time. But we need to make sure the “stuff” doesn’t become our only focus.
There’s a great verse in Matthew that says
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 9:19-21
Ace goes on to sing in the chorus of that song “Heaven tomorrow, Heaven, my chance to have it all.”
Enjoy the rest of your holiday season. Cherish the time you have with your family and remember the sacrifice made for those of us who were “born in the inn” you so that we may one day have it all.
